On its surface CompoundIt! looks eerily similar to Scrabble, and with good reason; CompoundIt! plays almost identical to the classic word game. The big difference here is that players aren’t using letters to create words, they’re using chemical elements to create compounds. Diatomic Gases, Binary Compounds, and polyatomic ions are all valid moves. Build up simpler compounds into more complex ones for a bigger score. There are even double and triple element and compound squares on the board to boost your points.
There’s not much new here in terms of gameplay, but that’s not the point. The point of CompoundIt! is its educational value and effectiveness as a learning tool. It’s also quite fun for science nerds! I have to admit I had to dust off some areas of my brain to play. My wife, a Pathobiology major, had no problem with a dusty brain. Guess I won’t be playing with her anymore!
CompoundIt! isn’t anything more than how it presents itself, a really cool, science-based Scrabble. It’s a game for students, teachers, scientists, enthusiasts, and nerds that can be scaled in complexity to handle middle school students all the way up to scientific professionals. It’s also only $25 on Kickstarter. CompoundIt! isn’t for everyone, but it’s perfectly suited for the market it’s after.
