Summary

Let’s clear the air for a second before this review starts. I do not, and have never, watch RWBY. To be honest, I had never even heard of it before I did my RWBY: Combat Ready Preview in 2017. Back then all I had was a small deck of cards and a script to use that went through a few turns of play. While the core mechanics remain the same as I described back then, it was a whole different experience actually getting some time to play the full release.

Pros

Great flow

Excellent co-op mechanics

Cons

Box insert is unintuitive

Art is not consistent

In RWBY 2-5 players can choose from any of the shows 4 main characters: Ruby, Weiss, Blake, or Yang as well as a fifth character, Penny. Each character has their own starting deck of cards, upgrade cards, and an Ultimate card. They also have a special ability called a Semblance, which generally can be used once during a character’s duel.

RWBY: Combat Ready Review - Game Progress
A game in progress

Before the game begins the players will pick a scenario and set up the Villain deck and any minions or other objectives. Players cooperatively try to defeat the villain and/or complete the scenario’s objective via a series of duels where one player faces off against the villain while the others provide support. It’s a unique take on cooperative play that immensely satisfying and exciting, keeping all players engaged throughout the entire game.

As the game progresses the villain becomes a bit more powerful, requiring players to upgrade their decks by purchasing upgrade cards with experience earned through play. There are even rules for campaigns that take place over several scenarios where players can keep these upgrades between games. Even so, players will need to work together to take down minions, perform amazing combos, and help buff each other when it’s not their turn in the spotlight.

The whole RWBY experience is fluid and highly entertaining, even if you’re not familiar with the show. The only major downsides to the game are the box’s insert, which follows no real rhyme or reason for storage, and that the artwork isn’t very consistent throughout the game. That’s not to say the artwork is bad. Most of it is excellent. It’s just that a few things here and there don’t seem to mesh very well.

RWBY: Combat Ready Review - Minis
Minis and such

RWBY does have more going for it than just excellent game play. All the components are top notch. Excellent feeling cards, transparent cubes, plastic discs, over-sized player boards, and amazing minis add to the overall experience of the game. All in all, Combat Ready is more than worth the $50 price tag, especially for fans of cooperative games looking for something a bit different.
