Summary
Remember when you were a kid and you’d gather all your toys together for a giant free-for-all? I do. Optimus Prime would command an army of GI Joe against Megatron and Cobra Commander. The Ninja Turtles would help out, being stealthy and all that. Skeletor? Aw man, he had some nasty tricks up his sleeves. Thankfully M.A.S.K. was there keep him in check. Funkoverse is a LOT like that…except without the previous IPs I just mentioned. What DO they have? Harry Potter, DC, Rick & Morty, and…The Golden Girls. Aw yeah. Things are going to get crazy.
Pros
- POPs!
- Solid game design
- Mix and match your favorite IPs
Cons
- Needs a good storage solution
- Packs are a bit pricey

I know what you’re probably thinking. Funko POP board games? Funko has gotta just be in it to cash in. That’s what I thought, too. After I’ve finally gotten to play the game I’m singing a different, large-headed tune. I’ve had a chance to get both the Harry Potter 4-Pack and The Golden Girls 2-Pack to the table. All I can say is that I’m eager to get more sets.

Each set comes with 2-4 miniature POP figurines, a board or two, cards, shards, dice, items, rules, scenarios, and some generic cardboard characters. You can play a 2-player game with a 2 pack and up to a 4-player game with a 4 pack. Each POP is balanced in a way where you don’t have to worry about points when building your team. It’s POP for POP. You can also mix and match POPs from ANY set.
At its heart, Funkoverse is a miniatures game. You pick a scenario, set it up as instructed, pick your POPs, and you’re ready to go. There are scenarios for 4 different game modes: Flags, Control, Leaders, and Territory. Each has different objectives you need to complete to earn points and win the game.
One of my favorite aspects of the game is the Cooldown Track. If a character is taken off the board, or a special ability is used, POPs or tokens are placed on the Cooldown Track for a certain number of rounds before they’re available again. It’s a great way to keep special abilities under control and to keep combat fluid. Of course my absolute favorite part of the game is the POPs, even if they are a tad big for the spaces on the board.

I never expected Funkoverse to be remotely good. Imagine my surprise when it not only was good, but great. It even made my top 5 games of 2019 (not to be confused with A Pawn’s Picks.) The packs are a bit pricey, but Funko Game is already looking for ways to get the price point down. I should mention that I got a sneak peak of Wave 2 while at PAX Unplugged and it’s AMAZING. I can’t say much, but I can say single packs are coming out, and one of the new 4-Packs has a character who’s never had a POP made of them before.
Do yourself a favor. At least go out an buy a 2-Pack. You won’t be sorry. Especially if that 2-Pack is The Golden Girls. I’m not lying when I say that Rose and Blanche are two of the best damn characters in the game.
