Alright, b-boys and b-girls. Time to throw down the cardboard and bust a move with Breakdancing Meeples, recently released by Atlas Games. Designed by Ben Moy, the game was originally self-published through The Game Crafter and then picked up by Atlas. Now it’s all grown up with heat transfer meeples, professional graphic design, and an excellent companion app that tracks score, keeps time, and provides fresh beats during play.

The game is super simple to learn and only takes 5 minutes to play. Each player gets a set of meeples, cubes, and cards in their color. Everyone starts with 2 routines that show what combination of dance moves they need to be completed, how many times they can be completed, and how many points each completion is worth. Play is simultanious with everyone chucking their meeples during 1 one minute rounds to try and complete their moves and earn points.

Each routine card needs a certain set of moves met to be scored

After each round players will have a chance to add new routines, or possibly buy Rally cards using points they’ve earned. You can only have 3 routines at a time, so make sure you always have the freshest moves! As for Rally cards, they provide bonuses to a routine, but you need to pay a point to snag one if it comes up. The player with the most points at the end of the 4th round wins.

Breakdancing Meeples is a ton of fun with the right crowd. Gamers who don’t do well with real-time games should probably steer clear of this one, but the game is so simple, portable, and entertaining that it’ll please most crowds. Who doesn’t love playing with their meeples?

The companion app is a must for the game, otherwise, you’ll need to keep track of the round times the boring way, with some other sort of timer. The app is polished and does exactly what it needs to do to keep the gaming moving at the frantic pace it’s meant to. It’s also a great way to keep score. The app is available on both the App Store and Google Play, so it doesn’t matter if you’ve got an iPhone or an Android device.
