“Where goes the stench of evil, so goes the cleansing wind of Minsc and Boo.” – Minsc

Battle for Baldur’s Gate brings two beloved characters made popular by Bioware’s Baldur’s Gate video game series and brings them into Dungeon Mayhem! Play as the mind-addled ranger, Minsc, and his Miniature, Giant Space Hamster, Boo, or the shapeshifting druid, Jaheira. Each brings some new mechanics to the game, adding just a bit more depth and complexity to the light, family game.

While Battle for Baldur’s contains two full character decks, it doesn’t come with the rules needed to play Dungeon Mayhem. While this could have been a great standalone expansion, you must have Dungeon Mayhem in order to use Minsc and Jaheira. Aside from that fact, this $10 expansion adds a lot of fun and variety to the game.

Battle for Baldur's Gate Review - Components
It’s so pretty

So what can these characters do? Jahira can shapeshift into one of two forms. When in either form some of her cards gain buffs. The trick here is careful management of her Wild Shape to do the maximum amount of damage. Minsc, on the other hand, is a straight-up bruiser who has a few friends, including Boo, join the fight. “Go for the eyes, Boo!”

Is this a required expansion? By all means, no. Is it awesome to have? Hell, yes! Minsc and Boo alone make Battle for Baldur’s Gate a worthy purchase. If you’re a fan of Dungeon Mayhem, and Dungeons and Dragons in general, spend the $10 it costs to add these two awesome characters to your game. If you’re still getting lots of fun out of your base copy, don’t feel you need to run out and pick this up right away.
