The first thing you need to do before playing As the Earth Crumbles is to build the Earth. Taking all the tiles in the game you start by placing them, face-up, in a 5×4 grid using the Advanced Tiles. Then, still using Advanced Tiles, you create a 4×3 layer on top of that. The Basic Tiles then form a 3×2 grid and a 1×2 grid for a total of 4 layers. This is where players will be drawing tiles from on their turns, only taking tiles that are completely uncovered.

Look! Look at this setup diagram!

The basics of the game have you taking a tile, earning income in the colored column on your Surface Board based on the the color of the tile you took, and spending money to build tiles you’ve taken onto your Surface Board. You’ve got 3 columns of 2 to build on, so you’ll need to stack tiles once you run out of space. Certain tiles will give you bonuses based on how many tiles are in the stack they’re on top of. Some tiles will generate coins. Some culture. Some Prosperity. Other will let you trade resources for other resources. It’s a game about building a solid engine to rack up as much as you can before the last tile is taken.

As the Earth Crumbles is a solid game, though it’s getting a bit more work done to it now that it’s won the Simple Elegance contest. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of it, though some new graphic design and artwork would most certainly be welcome. The iconography could certainly be more clear, and some artwork to tie it into the theme would be nice.

The components are mostly functional at this point

There is the makings of something truly great here. With a bit more polish this is a game I could see getting picked up by a larger publisher and doing very well. It’s ability to pack an engine builder in a compact format and time frame is very appealing.
