Every monster has a story, and they’re not always the villain. UNCAGED Vol 1 is the first in an anthology of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition adventures that focus on subverting tropes around a female mythological creature or monster. Hags, Harpies, Lamias, Medusas, they’re in there and not in any fashion you’d expect them to be. That’s the beauty of UNCAGED.

Featuring work from over 30 individuals, mostly women or non-binary authors, UNCAGED Vol 1 contains 25 D&D 5e adventures for tiers 1-4 with a wonderful forward written by Jasmine Bhullar of Relics & Rarities. Each adventure spotlights a different female creature or monster in a way not traditionally seen in fantasy RPGs.

It is important to note that a lot of the adventures contained in Vol 1 come with content warnings so that players and DMs know in advance what types of subject matter will come up during a game. Warning range from “Snakes” to “Domestic Violence”, “Suicide”, “Abuse”, and “Infanticide.” These aren’t there for shock value, and they’re not exploited in any way. They’re just there as warnings for those who may have triggers to such content.

UNCAGED is an absolute joy to read. Each adventure is engaging, well written, thought provoking, and fun. The book is professionally laid out, beautifully illustrated, and is the best supplement I’ve seen for D&D this year so far. I’ve already got plans to use several of the adventures in the 3 campaigns I am currently running.

UNCAGED Vol 1 is just the first of a 4 volume anthology, the rest of the books releasing later this year. You can snag the book in PDF form for $14.95 or in print-on-demand hardcover for $35.95. You can get both for $44.95. The digital version contains both full-color and printer-ready versions of all the content, including all the maps contained within.

I own the PDF, but am looking forward to getting the hardcover, as this is a book well worth owning in print. I personally can’t wait for the next 4 volumes to be released. If they’re anything like Vol 1, they’ll be amazing.
