Bodie Hartley is an illustrator and author of SlowQuest, fantasy zines that he creates himself and sells on Etsy. I can’t even remember how I came across his shop, or how I first found out about SlowQuest, but I was immediately intrigued by the idea of it.
The first book, in what Brodie hopes will be a series of books, is called The Goblin Guard. It’s a 35-page pick-your-path mini-adventure where you’re an adventurer searching for treasure in a dungeon. The only interaction here is an angry, little goblin.
This first SlowQuest book is short, even going back and choosing all the available paths. It’s also a fairly simple read. There’s not a lot of text as the zine’s dimensions are pretty small. This by no means diminishes what The Goblin Guard is, a beautiful hand-made product with a ton of charm.
Is it worth the $5.51 it costs? That all depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for an in-depth choose-your-own-adventure style book then this isn’t the product for you. If you like cool hand-made things and are looking for little humorous adventure with some cute illustrations then this would be a wonderful little zine to keep on your desk at work or on a coffee table.
I’m looking forward to more SlowQuest from Bodie, especially a longer adventure.
